Storm season is fast approaching so it’s time for homeowners to think about roof safety. Brisbane has some wild storms and heavy rain events, in and out of traditional storm season, so it’s always good to have your property – particularly your roof – storm-ready.The humble roof offers us the most protection in the event of storms and wild weather. The humble roof offers us the most protection in the event of storms and wild weather. In Queensland conditions, the roof will cop a beating. Generally, metal roofs stand up to harsh weather the best and COLORBOND® roofs are specifically designed to deal with Australian conditions.

Check your gutters and downpipes

Make sure your gutters are cleared of any debris. Overflowing gutters can cause roof damage so make sure gutters are clean so rainwater can get away easily. Rainwater can backflow into the ceiling area when your guttering is blocked.

Inspect the roof

It is a good idea to inspect your roof annually to ensure there are no holes or cracks in your roof sheeting. Make sure roof sheeting is secure and that there are no loose roof materials. If any area of your roof is discoloured it could indicate excess moisture and may need further investigation.

Check your ceilings for any signs of water damage, staining or sagging. Stains or mould on external walls can also indicate a problem. A damp smell in your ceiling space is another clue that your roof may be leaking.

Make sure any problems are rectified before storm season hits.

Trim the trees

If you have any trees close to the house it is imperative to keep them trimmed. Remove any overhanging branches and cut away any dead wood.
