A leaking roof can cause damage to your home’s ceilings and walls, exterior walls, structure, and foundation. The longer a leak goes undetected the more damage may be incurred. Paragon Roof and Guttering have seen some devastating damage as a result of unrepaired roofs. Depending on the condition of your roof it may be an easy fix or it could require replacement of existing roofing sheets and flashings.
Here are a few signs that your roof may be leaking –
- The Ceiling is stained
It is a good idea to do a visual check of your ceilings every now and again, especially in darker corners. Any discolouration on your ceiling needs to be checked. Generally, a water stain will look like a puddle which is often ringed in brown. Any signs of moisture should be investigated.
- Drip marks
Drip marks or stains on walls can mean you have a leak. Even if it seems minor you should take a closer look. Long term leaks can cause major structural damage.
- Water marks on exterior walls
Check your exterior walls for any water marks especially up under your roof line. If there are water marks in that area you could have a problem with your flashing. Watermarks or mould near downpipes or guttering could be an indication that these are not working correctly.
- The presence of mould
Mould on exterior walls could just be the result of lots of rain in a not so sunny spot but it could also be a sign that there is a problem with guttering or downpipes. Erosion below gutters is another sign that things aren’t right.
If your roof is old and showing signs of wear it could be leaking. Older roofs are prone to leak. Even if you can’t see any tell-tale signs there may well be a slow leak into the crawl space. It is a good idea to inspect older roofs to check their integrity.
